The Centre for Sustainability PH conducted two field expeditions in Narra, Palawan, late last year to collect almaciga seeds for nursery propagation, strengthening efforts to conserve one of the province’s most important forest species.
The expeditions were held from November 21 to 24 and December 5 to 10 with teams revisiting previously surveyed almaciga trees and gathering seeds for propagation and future reforestation activities.
The fieldwork was led by Centre for Sustainability PH almaciga soe Robert Arangorin and community advocate Aldwin Zacarias, with support from trained porters skilled in Single Rope Technique, a method used to safely access forest terrain and tree canopies.
The organization said the expeditions were carried out in coordination with the barangay local government unit of Princess Urduja in Narra and the Tagbanua community. Support was also provided by Booth Global.
Almaciga is a key non timber forest species in Palawan, valued for its ecological role and contribution to community livelihoods. Conservation groups said seed collection and nursery propagation are critical to sustaining almaciga populations amid deforestation and climate pressures.
Centre for Sustainability PH said additional seed collection expeditions are planned as part of its continuing community based forest conservation initiatives in Palawan.
