The provincial government has given P2,000 cash incentive to athletes who won gold in the MIMAROPA Regional Athletic Association meet in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.

Grace Estefano, information officer of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Palawan, said the cash awards were released to the winners immediately after the sports event.

Winners of silver and bronze medals will also receive cash incentives, but the amount will still be determined.

“Mayroong P2,000 ang gold, sa silver and bronze, titignan pa kung ilan ang mabibigay pero nag-release na sa gold, kung magkano lang kasi ang budget, ‘yon lang din ang paghahatian,” she said.

Palawan won third place in the secondary level and fourth place in the elementary level, she said.

The province netted 32 gold, 36 silver, and 59 bronze medals for the secondary level. At the elementary level, it got 22 golds, 24 silvers and 32 bronzes.

Puerto Princesa City, on the other hand, remains the champion with 77 golds at the secondary level. It was followed by Oriental Mindoro with 35, Palawan with 32, Occidental Mindoro with 23, Calapan City with 17, Romblon with 12 and Marinduque 8.

For the elementary level, Oriental Mindoro garnered 48 golds while Puerto Princesa ranked second with 26 followed by Occidental Mindoro with 26, Palawan-22, Calapan City-21, and Romblon and Marinduque with six each.

The provincial delegation sent 447 athletes to compete in the sports meet held on February 17 to 21.

The selected athletes will represent the region to the Palarong Pambansa in Davao City.
