The House of Representatives has approved on the third and final reading the cancellation of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in 2020, postponing it to December 5, 2022.

On Monday, the law makers approved House Bill No. 4933 with a total of 194 legislators voted for yes while six for no.

Jomel Ordas, spokesperson of the provincial COMELEC, said previously that there will be no conflict if the election will be postponed by the Congress.

“Wala naman [magiging problema doon] basta kung ano ‘yong nasa batas ‘yon lang ang i-implement ng COMELEC. Ipapatupad lang namin kung ano man ang existing o bagong election laws. Sa ngayon habang wala pa ang postponement tuloy lang ang COMELEC sa mga preparatory activities kagaya ng darating na voter registration,” Ordas said.

The provincial COMELEC’s statement came after President Rodrigo Duterte’s speech in the state of the nation address (SONA) urging the Congress to postpone the May 2020 Barangay and October 2022 SK elections.

“Congress has to postpone the May 2020 elections, ‘yong barangay at SK in October 2022 to rectify the truncated terms — to also provide them with the ample time to finish their programs and projects,” Duterte said.

This is the third cancellation of BSKE during President Duterte’s administration.

The consolidated version is now awaiting Duterte’s signature for its finality.
