An injured white-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) rescued in Culion has found a new home at the Calauit Safari Park after weeks of rehabilitation and coordinated care, the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) reported.
The eagle, which suffered an injury to its right wing, was surrendered to the PCSDS District Management Division (DMD) staff in Culion on August 19 and later transferred to the DMD-Coron Office for documentation and veterinary evaluation.
Despite treatment and continuous care, veterinarians determined that the bird’s broken wing rendered it unfit to survive in the wild.
Following its recovery, the eagle was officially turned over to Calauit Safari Park on October 2 through DMD-Calamian Monitoring and Enforcement Section Chief Micah B. Losauro. The park will provide continued care, protection, and monitoring for the raptor.
The PCSDS emphasized that the White-bellied Sea Eagle is classified as Endangered under PCSD Resolution No. 23-967 due to threats such as habitat loss, nest disturbance, and illegal hunting.
The species plays a crucial ecological role as a top predator in maintaining balance within Palawan’s marine and coastal ecosystems.
PCSDS thanked the individuals and agencies that helped rescue, rehabilitate, and transfer the eagle, citing the effort as an example of community cooperation in protecting Palawan’s biodiversity.
The agency urged the public to report cases of wildlife rescue, stranding, or sightings through its hotlines 0931 964 2128 or 0965 662 0248, or via the official PCSDS Facebook page. It reminded residents that injured or illegally traded wildlife must be immediately turned over to authorities for proper care and protection.
