CAB lowers fuel surcharge; airfare may go down
Airline passengers may see lower extra charges on plane tickets starting May 16 after the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) reduced the fuel surcharge from Level 18 to Level 15 for the second half of the month.
In an advisory released Tuesday, the CAB said the fuel surcharge for domestic flights under Level 15 may range from ₱491 to ₱1,436 depending on the distance of the trip.
For international flights, the fuel surcharge may range from ₱1,621.42 to ₱12,056.
These are lower compared to the current Level 18 fuel surcharge, where domestic flights carry additional charges ranging from ₱593 to ₱1,734, while international flights range from ₱1,958.44 to ₱14,561.87.
Fuel surcharge is an additional fee airlines may collect on top of the base fare to offset the effects of volatile oil prices.
According to the CAB, it continues to implement a 15-day monitoring and implementation cycle for fuel surcharges to help reduce the impact of rising fuel prices on travel costs.
The temporary measure will remain in effect until conditions stabilize or until revised or revoked by authorities.
The CAB also said airlines intending to impose or collect fuel surcharges must file their applications before the effectivity period.
The applicable conversion rate for May 16 to 31 is ₱61.18 to the U.S. dollar, according to the CAB.
