Traffic woes along the national road in Brooke’s Point, southern Palawan, are expected to lighten following the completion of the Salogon Bridge widening project, which the public works and highways department claims is a major upgrade.
The Mimaropa office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said the completion of the bridge will improve travel efficiency and road safety for motorists and transporters in the southern part of the province.
Salogon Bridge was expanded from two to four lanes to address what was described as a “growing congestion” caused by the increasing number of vehicles, particularly trucks transporting goods and supplies.
Carried out by the 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO) of the DPWH in Palawan, the project is part of the administration’s push to strengthen road networks across the Philippines.
“The widening of the Salogon Bridge is not just about adding lanes. It is about making mobility more efficient, supporting the growth of local businesses, and ensuring safer travels for our communities,” DPH Mimaropa said in a statement.
2nd DEO Engr. Noel Fuentebella reported to DPWH Mimaropa Regional Director Gerald Pacanan that the completed bridge includes a 46.10-meter-long reinforced concrete deck girder alongside the original structure.
The approaches were paved with Portland cement concrete pavement for smooth transitions, and slope protection measures were installed to prevent erosion. To improve safety and convenience for all users of the road, the refurbished bridge is also furnished with guardrails, drainage systems, and pedestrian-friendly elements.
The DPWH Mimaropa said almost 480 drivers per day will be able to enjoy a 20-minute reduction in travel time between Barangay Malis and Barangay Salogon, according to the Department of Public Works (DPWH).
It is expected that the infrastructure upgrade would facilitate traffic flow, increase road safety, and support the local economy by guaranteeing that products and services be transported around the region more quickly.
