A 21-year-old woman died after plunging more than 130 feet from a bridge during a bungee jump in Brazil, according to videos circulating on social media.
The victim was identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas.
Videos shared online showed the young woman being escorted by two staff members to the edge of Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, a municipality in Sao Paulo state, before she was pushed from the jumping platform.
Footage from multiple angles showed that the safety rope had not been attached to her body before the jump.
Seconds after she was released, bystanders could be heard shouting, “the rope, people, the rope,” according to the videos.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene but the woman was declared dead.
Authorities recovered her body and transferred it to the Legal Medical Institute for examination.
Reports said Rodrigues de Freitas had posted photos on social media shortly before the incident, including images of her jump wristbands and the bridge. In one post, she reportedly wrote: “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?”
The Civil Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether criminal charges will be filed.
Six people were arrested at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
