BFAR honors Puerto Princesa fisherfolk in ‘Paskong Baybayin’

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) MIMAROPA on December 12 recognized fisherfolk from nine coastal barangays in Puerto Princesa City, citing their role in sustaining local fisheries and strengthening food security during a nationwide holiday program at the Baywalk.

BFAR MIMAROPA brought its nationwide “Paskong Baybayin: Holiday Salu-Salo with our Fisherfolk” to the city to honor fishermen from barangays San Isidro, Mandaragat, Bagong Pag-Asa, Bagong Silang, San Jose, Matahimik, Bancao-Bancao, San Manuel and Tagburos.

Regional Director Roberto R. Abrera attended the celebration they organized. The regional fisheries and agriculture office said the activity aimed to honor fisherfolk as modern-day fishing heroes and to thank coastal communities whose daily work sustains local fisheries and contributes to national food supply.

The event was attended by City Councilor Luis Marcaida III, chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries, representing Mayor Lucilo Bayron; Arthiel K. Rodriguez, officer in charge provincial agriculturist of Palawan; Palawan 3rd District Rep. Gil Acosta, represented by Pol Gacosta; PMAJ Julie Buac, assistant commander of the PNP Maritime Group 2nd Special Operations Unit; and LTJG Daniel John T. Reyes, substation commander of the Philippine Coast Guard Puerto Princesa City.

A gift-giving activity highlighted the government’s appreciation for fisherfolk and their contribution to sustaining fisheries and food availability in Palawan.

The ceremonial “Pagpapailaw ng Parol ng Pag-asa ng Mangingisda” was also held, symbolizing hope, unity and resilience among coastal communities.

The celebration ended with a boodle fight, where fisherfolk, BFAR personnel and guests shared a meal, underscoring partnership between the government and the fishing sector.
