San Miguel National High School (SMNHS) clinched the championship in the high school division of the SPIKE! Puerto Princesa Inter-School Beach Volleyball Competition held last November 30 and December 1, 2019, at The Emerald Playa Resort and Eco-Park – Palawan and was initiated and sponsored by the Microtel by Wyndham.
In the collegiate division, STI College bagged the title in the men’s category while the Palawan State University emerged as champion in the women’s category.
The competition aims to promote beach volleyball and produce Palaweño athletes that could play outside the province and even internationally.
“Yong beach volleyball, we identified as one of the fastest-growing sports in the country,” Rene Suarez, general manager of Microtel by Wyndham, told Palawan News.
Suarez said Palawan has a lot of good players.
“I was really very impressed with the number of players that we have,” he added.
Team leader Harmony Analee Jacinto thanked Microtel for supporting beach volleyball in the city.
“Nagpapasalamat kami sa Microtel kasi nabigyan ng chance ‘yong mga bata na makapaglaro, maipakita ‘yong talent nila, ‘yong skill nila,” Jacinto said.
Jacinto said they are planning to hold an inter-municipality beach volleyball competition by next year and will also target the grassroots by having an elementary division in next year’s competition.
This year, nine schools were able to participate including Palawan State University (PSU), Fullbright College, STI College, Western Philippines University (WPU), Hope Christian School, Palawan National School (PNS), San Jose National High School (SJNHS), Bahile National High School (BNHS), and San Miguel National High School (SMNHS).
