The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Thursday announced the launch of a new vessel in Ulsan, South Korea, that will further strengthen the Philippine Navy fleet.
The new vessel, which will soon be christened as BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS 20), is the first of its class lined up out of the six offshore patrol vessels to be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) as part of the program.
The AFP said the launch, which coincides with the 127th Independence Day celebration, reinforces its dedication to national sovereignty and defense modernization.
Named after a fearless native leader who stood firm against foreign conquest in pre-colonial times, the AFP described BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS 20) as a modern emblem of the Filipino people’s resilience, courage, and unyielding spirit of independence.
During the launch, AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. highlighted the importance of the event, underscoring the ship’s role in advancing the Philippines’ maritime defense and security.
“The launch of Offshore Patrol Vessel No. 1, the BRP Rajah Sulayman, is not merely the unveiling of a new ship—it is a bold declaration of our commitment to maritime security and the defense of our sovereignty,” Brawner remarked.
“This vessel marks a new chapter for the Philippine Navy, reflecting our resolve to enhance our operational capabilities and extend our presence across our vast maritime domain,” he said.
Present along with Brawner during the launch was HHI Chief Operating Officer and Senior Executive Vice President Joo Won Ho.
