Troops stationed at BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal stopped illegal fishing activities by Chinese fishermen aboard two small boats in the West Philippine Sea on October 25.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said its personnel acted quickly, seizing air compressors and bottles believed to contain cyanide, a chemical commonly used in destructive fishing methods that harm coral reefs and marine life.
A report from the Maritime Command Operations Platform (MCOP) of the Philippine Navy’s confirmed that several Chinese maritime militia vessels (CMMVs) and a China Coast Guard (CCG) ship were also detected in the area.
Despite poor visibility at sea, Filipino troops successfully drove the foreign vessels away from Philippine waters.
The AFP said the operation shows its firm commitment to protect not only the country’s sovereignty but also the marine environment and the livelihood of Filipino fishermen who depend on the resources of the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
It added that the military will continue to promote responsible stewardship of the ocean and oppose any illegal or harmful activity within Philippine territory, reflecting the professionalism, discipline, and dedication of the nation’s soldiers in carrying out their duty.
