City to host 2019 National Young Leaders’ Conference

The 2019 National Young Leaders’ Conference (NYLC), spearheaded by the Global Institute for Youth Development in partnership with the city government and Youth Development Office (YDO), is set to convene in Puerto Princesa on November 22 to 26.

NYLC, with this year’s theme “#SDGeneration: Acting towards Social Economic, and Environmental Sustainability by 2030”, is an annual gathering of hundreds of young leader advocates from around the Philippines. The NYLC campaign focuses on empowering the next-generation leaders with practical skills necessary to lead initiatives geared towards the realization of sustainable goals (SDGs).

Arjo Escalona, city local youth development officer of YDO and this year’s NYLC conference director, said that they are expecting the delegates to come up with specific policies that may be used by the city officials in advancing the SDG movement.

“This is not just a typical workshop because the young leaders are also instituted to create policy guidelines. In fact, we are tying up with four western barangays—Macarascas, Tagabinet, Cabayugan, and Buenavista—as part of the community engagement”, Escalona said.

The five-day convention is lined up with training and workshops on SDGs categorized into four clusters: people, prosperity, planet, and peace. Escalona also said that policymaking should be people-centered so the suggested solutions would fit within the community itself.

“The participants will have breakout sessions and community immersion during the conference para malaman at ma-experience nila first-hand yung situations sa mga barangays”, he added.

Puerto Princesa City was chosen to be this year’s host city because of its continued bid as the model city for SDG attainment in the past decade.
