City ordinance proposes monthly clean-up drive in 66 barangays

The City Council wants to require all 66 barangays in Puerto Princesa to conduct an intensified monthly clean-up drive.

The clean-up drive is being proposed by Councilor Henry Gadiano in an ordinance he filed Monday morning.

Gadiano said the measure is aimed at eliminating the mosquito-breeding sites that cause dengue and other diseases.

“Napansin natin na ang intensified cleaning program ng bawat barangay ay makaka-prevent ng dengue. Dengue ang una nating tina-target dyan. Dati ang gumagawa niyan is ang Oplan Linis, pero hindi nila kaya ang 66 barangays — bago nila matapos ang dito, mataas na naman ang mga damo sa ibang mga barangays. Hindi nila iaasa [lang dapat] sa Oplan Linis ang paggawa nito. Dapat kanya-kanyang barangay, kanya-kanyang linis tayo,” he said.

In his proposed ordinance, Gadiano said dredging, cleaning of clogged canals, esteros, waterways, and the removal of water-collecting receptacles that hold stagnant waters such as old tires, plastic containers, and tin cans” can help eliminate the mosquito breeding grounds.

He also recommended grass cutting, pruning of overgrown bushes, and trimming of tree branches.

Gadiano said the monthly clean-up drives will also “maintain the cleanest and greenest city title of Puerto Princesa”.

“The barangays will be provided with funds. So magre-request sila sa city ng kung anong kailangan nila para sa intensification ng clean-up drive. Halimbawa mag-request ng grass cutter,” Gadiano also said.

He also said that the equipment the city government will provide to barangays could be leased out to private individuals so the government can generate income

The proposed ordinance was forwarded to the Committee on Barangay Affairs for review.
