The confirmed death toll from the MV June Aster fire has risen from 35 to 76 following the recovery of 41 additional remains from the vessel in Coron, Palawan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Saturday, September 12.
PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the remains would be transported aboard BRP Cape Engaño (MRRV-4411) on September 13.
Authorities said 43 people survived the fire, while 13 remain unaccounted for. Two others listed on the passenger manifest reported that they did not board the vessel.
The figures are based on the vessel’s ticket manifest, which listed 134 people. Authorities said the numbers could still change as recovery and identification operations continue.
Cayabyab also reported that personnel of the Philippine National Police Scene of Crime Operatives recovered the dog that was aboard MV June Aster.
