Mining engineers from across the country joined a tree-planting activity at the rehabilitation site of Palawan Quicksilver Mines, Inc. (PQMI) in Barangay Sta. Lourdes on June 12, coinciding with the celebration of the 128th Philippine Independence Day and the closing day of the Mining Engineers’ Convention 2026 (MinECon 2026), held from June 9 to 12 in Puerto Princesa City.
The activity highlighted the mining sector’s commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible resource development, with participants contributing to the greening and rehabilitation of formerly mined areas.
Organizers said the initiative reflects the role of mining professionals in balancing economic growth, natural resource development, innovation, and environmental protection.
Among those who joined the activity were Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Director Cecille Ochavo-Saycon of Region VI, MGB Regional Director Benjie L. Espejo of the Negros Island Region, Engr. Armando L. Malicse, president of the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers (PSEM) Visayas Chapter, and representatives from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Palawan.
The tree-planting activity formed part of the convention’s environmental component, demonstrating the mining industry’s efforts to support ecological restoration while promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices.
Participants planted tree seedlings within the PQMI rehabilitation area, contributing to ongoing efforts to restore vegetation and improve environmental conditions in previously disturbed sites.
Organizers said the activity underscores the importance of rehabilitation and environmental management in modern mining operations, emphasizing that responsible mining goes beyond resource extraction and includes long-term commitments to ecosystem recovery and community development.
The event also served as an Independence Day initiative highlighting how environmental conservation and sustainable development can contribute to nation-building and the responsible use of the country’s natural resources.
MinECon 2026 gathered mining engineers, industry stakeholders, government agencies, and partner institutions under the theme “Engineering the Future: Sustainable Minerals for a Resilient Nation,” promoting discussions on innovation, sustainability, and responsible mining practices in the Philippines.
