The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is closely monitoring the ongoing investigations into the drowning of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in Dipaculao, Aurora, as the league weighs possible policy and governance responses.
In a statement on Sunday, the UAAP said it is awaiting the findings of multiple investigating bodies, including the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the Commission on Higher Education, and the concerned member school, before taking formal action.
“The UAAP will fully take into account the findings of the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the Commission on Higher Education, and the concerned member school, as only limited details have been officially confirmed,” the league said.
It added that it is urging authorities to conclude the probe swiftly but thoroughly to address growing public speculation surrounding the incident.
“We urge all concerned agencies to conduct a speedy and thorough investigation in order to put all speculations to rest,” it said.
Once official results are in, the league said representatives from its seven member schools will conduct a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, which occurred during an offseason team-building activity.
The UAAP stressed that any disciplinary measures will be anchored on due process and verified findings.
“Rest assured that the UAAP will enforce sanctions in cases where there are breaches of established protocols, laws and regulations, provided these sanctions are established through due process and in accordance with governance and disciplinary procedures,” it said.
The league also signaled possible reforms in response to the incident, including tighter safety protocols, enhanced accountability measures, and expanded welfare systems for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
If necessary, the UAAP said it is open to revising existing rules to strengthen protections and improve access to mental health and support services across member universities.
UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag earlier clarified that the league cannot impose a preventive suspension on Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin, who is currently on leave, noting that the incident happened during the offseason.
Meanwhile, Ateneo has opted to withdraw from the FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup as the university continues to grieve the loss of its two players.
“Upon continuous discussions and as confirmed with the university’s athletic director, Emmanuel Fernandez, it was deemed appropriate to grant their request out of compassion following the tragic incident,” tournament organizer FilOil EcoOil Sports said.
Ateneo’s lone preseason game—a 72-52 loss to Adamson on June 6—has also been removed from the tournament records following the withdrawal.
