The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday officially declared the onset of the rainy season, citing the sustained presence of the southwest monsoon or “habagat” over the past several days.
PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando said occasional to frequent rainfall linked to the monsoon has already been observed in recent days, particularly across western sections of Luzon and the Visayas.
“This signifies the onset of rainy season across the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas,” Servando said.
The weather bureau noted, however, that dry spells or “monsoon breaks” may still occur during the season and can last for several days or even weeks, temporarily interrupting rainfall patterns.
PAGASA also warned that with the possible development of El Niño conditions, stronger monsoon rains over western Luzon and the Visayas remain highly likely in the coming months.
The agency urged the public and concerned government offices to prepare and take precautionary measures against potential hazards such as flooding and landslides brought by seasonal rains.
