Government agencies, environmental groups, researchers, and local government units have launched the Coral Reef Rescue (CRR) Project aimed at strengthening coral reef conservation and promoting climate resilience in coastal communities across Palawan.
The launching and inception workshop was held on May 25–26, 2026 in Puerto Princesa City, bringing together stakeholders from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), Provincial Government of Palawan, and the municipalities of El Nido, Taytay, and Dumaran, alongside local and international conservation partners.
Dubbed “Resilient Coral Reefs, Resilient Communities,” the initiative seeks to reinforce efforts to protect coral reef ecosystems while supporting sustainable livelihoods in coastal areas dependent on marine resources.
During the workshop, participants identified key strategies for reef protection, including improved inter-agency coordination, integration of traditional ecological knowledge, threat and cost-benefit assessments, and strengthened community participation in marine conservation programs.
Stakeholders also signed the “Palawan Pledge of Commitment,” signaling their shared responsibility to protect the province’s marine ecosystems for future generations.
Officials emphasized that coral reefs play a critical role in food security, coastal protection, tourism, and livelihoods, underscoring the need for sustained conservation efforts amid increasing environmental pressures.
