The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO), in partnership with interns from Palawan State University, conducted a seagrass assessment in Barangay Luzviminda on April 23 to support data-driven coastal resource management.
According to the City ENRO, the activity is part of ongoing efforts to monitor the condition of coastal ecosystems and guide local government planning.
“This field activity forms part of our continuing efforts to monitor the health of coastal ecosystems, identify species composition and distribution, and generate science-based data that will guide the City Government in planning effective coastal and marine resource management programs,” the office said.
The assessment focused on documenting seagrass species and their distribution, which are considered critical indicators of marine ecosystem health.
The City ENRO emphasized the ecological importance of seagrass beds, noting that these serve as nursery grounds for fish, help stabilize sediments, and protect shorelines.
“By assessing their condition, we strengthen our capacity to safeguard these habitats for both present and future generations,” it added.
The activity also highlighted collaboration between the local government and academic institutions, with Palawan State University interns participating in the fieldwork.
“Through the City ENRO’s internship program, PalSU students gain hands-on experience in environmental fieldwork… creating a meaningful partnership that benefits both learning and local governance,” the office said.
