BFAR backed fisherfolk group in Taytay nets gains with half-ton milkfish harvest

A newly formed fisherfolk group in Taytay has recorded early gains after harvesting nearly half a ton of milkfish from a government-supported aquaculture project in Barangay Alacalian.

The Maubog Green Mussels and Seaweed Fisherfolk Association (MAGMASFA), based in Sitio Maubog, completed its harvest on April 1, with the produce immediately sold—an indication of strong demand despite the yield falling short of initial targets due to rearing challenges.

Led by Abegail Neo Luna, the group is implementing a bangus cage culture project aimed at boosting production and income among its members, most of whom are small-scale fisherfolk.

The initiative is part of a Technology Demonstration Project of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in MIMAROPA, which introduces modern and sustainable aquaculture methods to coastal communities.

Through the project, fisherfolk are trained to adopt improved fish cage systems to increase yield, enhance livelihoods, and build resilience in the sector.

Barangay Alacalian officials, including village chief Alexander Avenue, have expressed continued support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of local government backing in sustaining community-based livelihood programs.

According to BFAR, despite operational challenges, MAGMASFA’s first harvest signals a promising start, showing how emerging fisherfolk organizations in Palawan can translate government support into tangible economic opportunities.
