More than 400 medicinal and forest tree species were planted in Barangay Sagpangan, Aborlan on March 3 as part of activities marking World Wildlife Day 2026, led by the Provincial Government of Palawan–Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO).
The tree-planting activity carried the theme “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage, and Livelihoods.”Species planted included narra, ipil, bignay, lipote, banaba, and mararanggo.
PG-ENR Officer Atty. Noel Aquino said the activity aims to strengthen environmental protection while promoting plants that contribute to community health and livelihoods.
“The celebration of World Wildlife Day 2026 reminds us that protecting our environment is a shared responsibility. By planting medicinal and aromatic plants, we are not only conserving biodiversity but also supporting the health and well-being of our communities,” Aquino said in a press release.
The activity was conducted at the barangay’s Public Parks and Green Spaces in partnership with the local government of Aborlan, along with various agencies and sectors.
Aside from the tree planting, organizers also held the Wildlife Quiz Bee 2026 at Sagpangan Elementary School to raise students’ awareness of wildlife conservation and environmental protection.
Also present during the event were Felizardo A. Gacad Jr., regional director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) MIMAROPA, and Alvin S. Requimin, chief of the Mine Safety, Environmental and Social Development Division of the same office.
PG-ENRO said the activity reflects the collaboration of government agencies, organizations, and communities in protecting Palawan’s natural resources, aligned with the PALAWAN + PLUS Development Agenda, which promotes environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods in the province.
