More than 150 beneficiaries of the Food Always in the Home, or FAITH, Program from Quezon, Rizal, and Bataraza joined a training on community and backyard gardening as part of the provincial government’s effort to reduce malnutrition in Palawan.
The training was led by the Provincial Agriculture Office in coordination with the local governments of the three municipalities. The activity focused on helping households produce their own nutritious food to support the province’s goal of lowering malnutrition in communities.
Participants were trained on establishing and maintaining community and backyard gardens, including container gardening that can be done at home to ensure a regular supply of vegetables.
They also learned how to produce organic farm inputs such as insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers, and flower inducers using plant extracts and other readily available materials, which officials said can help families sustain food production at low cost.
The Provincial Agriculture Office said the activity was a follow up to the distribution of gardening tools and agricultural inputs to beneficiaries last year, and was intended to ensure that households are able to use the support provided to them.
Provincial officials said the initiative supports the objectives of the FAITH Program under the Provincial Nutrition Action Plan, which aims to improve nutrition and overall health by boosting food production in homes, schools, and communities across Palawan.
