A new low pressure area west of Puerto Princesa is being monitored by the state weather bureau, even as the system earlier tracked as Wilma has already dissipated.
PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez said Tuesday that the new disturbance was last seen 390 kilometers off the city and is expected to move farther away from land.
“Ito ay huling namataan sa layo na 390 kilometers west ng Puerto Princesa, Palawan,” she said, noting that it has a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the coming days.
Its chance of intensifying in the next 24 hours remains low, and if it strengthens, it will form outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
Wilma, the low pressure area monitored in recent days, has fully weakened. The new system has become the bureau’s main focus as the northeast monsoon and easterlies shape the weather across Luzon and the Visayas.
Dominguez said the clash between these winds has produced a shearline that is lifting rain clouds over northern and central Luzon.
Metro Manila will have cloudy skies with light rain, while the rest of Luzon will see fair weather with warm conditions at midday and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon.
The Kalayaan Islands may still experience scattered rain due to the new low pressure area but should see gradual improvement.
Rainfall may reach 50 to 100 millimeters in Cagayan, Isabela, and Aurora.
