Let’s face it, election season in the Philippines can be intense. From the endless debates on social media to the passionate (and sometimes heated) discussions with family and friends, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, maintaining a sense of calm is crucial to help you navigate the halalan chaos with your sanity intact.
Elections can elicit a distinct type of stress, especially in the period leading up to and on election day, with research suggesting conservatives may grapple with more heightened stress levels compared to liberals (Zhu & Neupert, 2022). Simultaneously, the anticipation of electoral results and exposure to election-related stressors can significantly exacerbate negative emotions. Therefore, developing effective coping strategies may be crucial for managing the anxiety and strain associated with elections.
Now what can we do to keep a level head amidst the “halalan hysteria”? First, acknowledge your feelings. It’s perfectly normal to feel stressed, anxious, or even angry during elections. Don’t suppress those emotions, but also don’t let them control you. Next, limit your exposure to political news, especially on social media. The constant barrage of information, opinions, and sometimes misinformation can be overwhelming. Set boundaries for yourself; perhaps allocate specific times for catching up on election news and then disconnect to focus on other activities. Selectively exposing yourself to political information can help you avoid political stress.
Rather than being overwhelmed by the election chaos, you can take charge by focusing on the factors within your control. Educate yourself on the candidates and issues, exercise your right to vote, and make informed decisions. Engage in activities that nourish your well-being, such as spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, exercising, or practicing mindfulness. These rejuvenating pursuits can help you recharge and approach the elections with a clearer, calmer mindset, empowering you to navigate this period with poise and confidence.
This election season, remember that your well-being is paramount. By prioritizing your mental health, staying informed, and actively engaging in self-care you can navigate the election period with grace and resilience. Your mental health is not a casualty of democracy, but a crucial component of it.
