PPUR ferry service to implement rate increase

The Protected Area Management Board of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park has announced that the Sabang Sea Ferry Multipurpose Cooperative will implement a new boat fare of ₱350 per person, with a minimum of six passengers per boat.

This fare will apply starting October 16 for trips from Sabang Wharf to the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR).

Park Superintendent Elizabeth Maclang said the new fare is based on City Ordinance No. 1239 approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod and signed by Mayor Lucilo Bayron on May 6.

Maclang explained that the Sabang Sea Ferry Multipurpose Cooperative (SSFMC) had requested the fare increase from the current rate of ₱200 per person. The original implementation date was October 1, but travel operators asked for an extension.

“Although there were disagreements and oppositions, everything was explained to them, and they were given time. They were asked to submit their position papers, but they didn’t,” Maclang said in a phone interview with Palawan News.

She clarified that those who booked in advance would not be affected by the fare increase.

“On October 16, the new fare will automatically take effect. However, for advance bookings, even if the tour is scheduled for next year, the old rate will still apply,” she said.

“But if you don’t submit an advance booking, the new rate will apply,” she added.

Maclang also pointed out that the cooperative had been requesting the fare increase for some time now, as the current rate has been in place since 2016.

She noted a separate issue among tour operators who have not adjusted their rates, which remain at ₱2,500 per person.

“Some are even lowering their rates to as low as ₱1,800. So, if they have a dive rate as part of their marketing or promotional strategy, they shouldn’t blame the cooperative or the PPUR for it,” she said.

Maclang emphasized that the increase applies only to the boat fare, and other fees remain unchanged.

“The PPUR entrance permit is still ₱500, and the environmental fee is ₱150. We haven’t increased these fees, and there’s even a discount now, with the permit costing ₱400. We previously raised the permit fee from ₱175 because of added features and innovations,” she explained.

“We now have additional innovations like online booking and payment systems, so you no longer need to visit the office and wait in long lines to book,” she concluded.
