A seven-year-old boy in Barangay Caruray, San Vicente, northern Palawan, has been killed in what police authorities say may have been an accidental shooting.
The victim who was only identified as “Jimboy”, a resident of Sitio Candamia, Caruray, was killed on Wednesday, April 17.
The suspect, who also lives in the same place, was a 12-year-old-boy named “Daboy”.
PRO MIMAROPA said the incident was reported to them only on April 19 at about 4:30 a.m. by Caruray barangay councilor Jerwin Pahayahay.
“At 4:45 a.m. on the same date, personnel of the San Vicente MPS (Municipal Police Station) together with the 2nd Platoon of the PPMFC immediately proceeded thereat to verify the report. Upon arrival at the said area, Pat Melchor Nangit (IOC) found the lifeless body of the victim lying on the grassy area, more or less 40 meters away from the house of the suspect,” the spot report stated.
Initial investigation disclosed that the incident happened while the two boys were playing inside the house of Joselito Vista, stepfather of the suspect.
Unfortunately, Daboy and Jimboy played with a firearm they found, the spot report said.
“The suspect accidentally pulled the trigger that hit the neck of the victim,” it further stated.
According to the statement of Lelibeth Yara, mother of the victim, she heard a gunshot on April 17 at around 1o:00 a.m. from their neighbor’s house where Jimboy was playing with the suspect.
The spot report said she immediately called her Jenelyn Garcia to look for Jimboy in the neighbor’s house, but Daboy allegedly blocked her way and told she Jimboy ran outside.
“She noticed the bloodstain on the feet of the suspect. The family of the victim searched where his body was and found it around 7:00 p.m. on the same date,” added the PRO MIMAROPA report.
Daboy was placed under the care of the municipal social welfare.
The firearm in the alleged accidental shooting was surrendered to the police by Pahayahay.
It was a caliber .45 Llama Maxi Lif without proper documents and with a magazine loaded with seven live ammunition. Thirteen pieces of live ammunition that were kept in a baby diaper were also surrendered.
The police report said the gun belonged to Vista.
