More than 5,000 pets were vaccinated against rabies during the MIMAROPA Initiative “One-Time Big-Time” Rabies Eradication Program held in Busuanga and Coron from October 20 to 24.
Provincial Rabies Coordinator Dr. June Clyde Descallar of the Provincial Veterinary Office (ProVet) said the vaccination drive also provided spaying and ligation services to 375 dogs and cats.
At least 320 pet owners received free services under the program.
Rabies is a zoonotic disease, which means it can spread from animals to humans. It is caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system and is most often transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, usually a dog.
Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. Still, it can be prevented through vaccination of pets and prompt medical treatment after exposure. Regular pet vaccination and public awareness are key to stopping its spread.
In Palawan, rabies remains a public health concern, especially in rural areas.
Government programs led by veterinary and health offices continue to push for mass vaccination drives and community education to prevent infections.
These efforts aim to make the country rabies-free through cooperation among local governments, veterinarians, and residents.
Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Darius Mangcucang thanked the local governments of Busuanga and Coron for their cooperation, including their Municipal Agriculture Offices, barangay officials, and Barangay Veterinary Aides.
To recognize the volunteers, the Office of the Governor organized an appreciation dinner led by Executive Assistant Carlo Buitizon, who extended Governor Amy Alvarez’s message of thanks to all participating veterinarians and partners.
The governor’s office also vowed to continue supporting the MIMAROPA Initiative next year.
The provincial government also acknowledged the support of other local government units and private partners, including Marinduque Governor Melecio Go, Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Dolor, Calapan City Mayor Doy Leachon, Victorias City Mayor Abelardo Bantug III of Negros Occidental, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, and Zoetis Philippines.
The province said the success of the campaign shows the continued cooperation among MIMAROPA provinces in promoting animal health, preventing rabies, and strengthening veterinary services in local communities under the Palawan+Plus Development Agenda of Governor Alvarez.
