5,000 signatures collected for Alyansa Narra anti-mining petition; group not immediately allowed into PCSD
More than 5,000 signatures collected by Alyansa Narra were brought to the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), but members of the group said they were not immediately allowed to enter the office, leaving them disappointed.
The signatures form part of a petition calling for transparency and accountability from the local and national governments regarding mining activities in the municipality of Narra.
During a People’s Mobilization Caravan held on Thursday, June 4, the group aired its concerns over what it described as the government’s lack of action on ongoing mining exploration activities, coal expansion, issues involving Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) and Certificates of Precondition, as well as concerns related to SEP clearance and ECAN compliance in Narra.
“Almost 5,000 signatures at ito po ay tuloy-tuloy pa rin, hindi kami titigil magpa-signature,” said Romil Manglicmot, president of Alyansa Narra, during a press conference held at the Capitol on Thursday.
Carrying their petition letters and the collected signatures, members of the group proceeded to the coal plant in Barangay Bato-Bato, Narra, and to the Sangguniang Bayan of Narra to formally present their concerns.
The group also went to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS), where they claimed they were not immediately allowed to enter.
According to the group, an official eventually came out several minutes later to receive their petition letter.
An estimated 100 individuals from various sectors participated in the caravan.
