20% rental discount proposed for Puerto Princesa market vendors

Unable to provide direct financial assistance to struggling sectors, officials in Puerto Princesa City are now turning to tax and rental relief measures as fuel prices continue to drive up the cost of goods and daily operations for businesses.

Vice Mayor Peter “Jimbo” Maristela has proposed an ordinance granting a 20% discount on rental fees for commercial spaces operated by the city government, particularly in public markets, to help small tenants cope with rising fuel costs.

Maristela said the measure is intended to soften the impact of the ongoing fuel crisis on vendors and prevent further increases in commodity prices.

He said the proposed discount would have minimal impact on city revenues.

The proposal is part of a broader set of relief measures being discussed by the city council following the declaration of a state of national energy emergency by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr..

Earlier, the city council approved a 10% discount on real property tax, while a separate proposal seeking a reduction in business taxes remains pending.

Councilor Modesto “Jonjie” Rodriguez said the measures were introduced to help residents and businesses cope with rising operational costs linked to the energy situation.
