Young Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel “Caloy” Yulo has secured his bid for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Caloy placed 16th out of 160 competing athletes in the world qualifier for men’s individual all-around finals.
He also qualified and placed 7th in the floor exercise in the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
He is the second Filipino athlete to secure an Olympic bid after the pole vaulter EJ Obiena.
Caloy is the eldest of the Yulo siblings who dominated this year’s Batang Pinoy Championship held in Puerto Princesa City.
In an earlier interview with Palawan News, Caloy said that his Olympic bid took years of sweat and hard labor in training.
“Halos araw-araw ang training ko kasi gusto ko na maka-gold. Alam kong malalakas ang mga kalaban pero kasi ang sabi ni coach palakasin ko raw ang loob (ko),” he said.
Cynthia Carrion, president of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines, in a press statement on Monday, said that Caloy performed beautifully which made him at par alongside the “world favorites” in the competition such as Russia, China, and Japan.
“He had a lot of international exposure and trained in Japan for two years before going here,’’ Carrion said.
