Authorities have apprehended two suspects in the killing of El Nido barangay captain Ruben Arzaga.
Nabbed on September 15 by the El Nido police were Abel Villarosa, 25, and Ariel Villarosa, 23, both residents of Sitio Batbat, Barangay Villa Libertad, El Nido, Palawan.
Investigation revealed that both suspects had a grudge with the victim who had apprehended illegally cut lumber from them on several occasions, the last being on the day before he was shot and killed.
Arzaga had joined a local environmental law enforcement team surveying the mountains of Batbat in search for illegal loggers who had collected around 1,000 board feet of Amogis wood when they were ambushed.
Arzaga was shot in the head and died while being rushed to Puerto Princesa City for treatment.
A case of murder and four counts of attempted murder were filed against the suspects at the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor in Puerto Princesa City on September 17.
Meanwhile, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu is set to visit Arzaga’s wake and honor the late barangay chief with a “Bayani ng Kalikasan” award on September 23, 2017.
