San Vicente is targeting 10 million tourists to visit it before 2044, a municipal official told Palawan News.
“Sa master plan namin, aabot tayo ng 10 million tourist arrival for San Vicente alone in the year 2044 [and] that is if everything that’s laid out in the master plan will be strictly followed. Kung lahat ng investors din na kasama sa pagpaplano will also develop their respective properties based on the plan,” municipal administrator James Inawasan said.
Inawasan cited the increase in tourist arrivals in San Vicente compared to their initial projection.
The hike in tourist arrivals, he said, is due to recent developments in the tourism industry in the Philippines.
“Because of the recent developments in the tourism industry in the Philippines like the closure in Boracay, additional flights for Puerto Princesa, some problems with El Nido and Coron, nagkaroon siguro ng spill over ng tourists,” he pointed out.
San Vicente is popular because of Port Barton which takes 80 percent of its total tourist arrivals.
Inawasan also added that if their town becomes fully developed, there is a higher chance of retaining tourists to stay more than one day.
“But eventually, once na na-develop na talaga ang San Vicente, nandiyan na ang mga resort, we will have a higher chance of retaining the tourists instead of them going to other parts of Palawan,” he said.
Municipal tourism officer Lucylyn Panagsagan said from January to August 2018, San Vicente has already recorded 25,630 tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2017 which only had 26,677.
She said they are still awaiting the numbers for the last quarter of the year, which they expect to be about 40,000.
“Sa ngayon pa lang nararamdaman na namin na mag-i-increase talaga ‘yong tourist arrival. Di ba mga nasa 90 percent na so meaning hanggang August pa lang, apat na buwan pa to go. Ang projection namin for 2020 is 50,000 and low projection pa yon. Sa 2019 baka ma-meet na namin ‘yong projection ng 2020,” Panagsagan said.
San Vicente’s target tourist arrival for 2021 is 50,000 based on the tourism master plan, she said.
