Romblon’s sea turtle (pawikan) hatchery in Barangay Bunsuran, Ferrol town, recently received a solar-powered modular facility that will be the powerhouse of Bantay Dagat enforcers who protect the marine territory and the wildlife.
It was given to the hatchery by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in MIMAROPA in cooperation with the local government unit of Ferrol, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Romblon Provincial Tourism Office.
The solar-powered modular facility will also be used by Bantay Dagat to safeguard the marine protected area (MPA) of Sitio Binucot.
Romblon Provincial Science and Technology (PSTC) director Marcelina Servañez said the solar-powered modular facility was equipped with a computer and printer that can be used by Bantay Dagat in their information dissemination to increase the population of the sea turtles.
“Napakahalaga nitong mga pawikan, kasi sila ang magiging batayan kung healthy ang ating environment, kasi kung wala sila ibig sabihin hindi maganda yung kapaligiran para kanilang pangitlogan,” said Servañez.
Bunsuran barangay officials thanked the DOST-MIMAROPA because the solar-powered unit can help in the protection of the wildlife species in Romblon.
The DOST-MIMAROPA, on the other hand, expressed their gratitude to Romblon Governor Eduardo Firmalo and the provincial tourism office for their help in providing the facility.
According to the DENR, the sea turtle that nests and breeds in Binucot are the green sea turtle, Olive Ridley, hawksbill and leatherback.
The last recorded sea turtle hatching was in May this year. (PJF/DMM/PIA-MIMAROPA/Romblon)
