Around 78 smashers flocked to the Usman Gymnasium and townsite in Rio Tuba, Bataraza on Friday for the first-ever badminton tournament spearheaded by the barangay and Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) and Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC).

No less than Rio Tuba barangay chairman Nelson D. Acob attended the opening of the sports event and expressed their support to all initiatives emanating from the community.

“Nandito lang kaming barangay government, susuportahan namin kayo. Ituloy-tuloy na natin ito. Marami pa tayong palarong inihanda para sa ating 70th Founding anniversary,” said Acob.

Acob also highlighted some different activities like billiards, motocross, motor show and bangkarera among others to be held for the first time this year.

The two-day tournament is primarily facilitated by the Rio Tuba Bay Badminton Club (RTBBC), an independent sports organization operating in Rio Tuba headed by interim chairperson Victor Crisente Catain.

Flordeliza Ria Baguyo, RTBBC interim tournament organizer said they are happy to partner with Rio Tuba for the first time and is looking forward to more tournaments in the future.

“Masaya at maswerte kami na pumayag ang LGU Rio Tuba sa pakikipag-partner sa amin upang maisakatuparan itong tournament. Sana masundan kaagad next year,” said Baguyo.

Baguyo underscored that their goal is to inspire other Rio Tuba residents from different sitios aside from townsite to engage in such sport.

The tournament is part of Rio Tuba’s 70th weeklong founding anniversary celebration this March.
