CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office called on the public to protect the integrity of senior citizen privileges and benefits.

During a forum organized by Philippine Information Agency, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Zarah C. Magboo said they get reports about deceased senior citizens availing the 20 percent discounts on certain consumer products.

“It is really happening in our place that we received calls from the major drugstores here in Calapan. They verify with us about the owners of discount cards and that after our verification, it is true that the owner of the card has already passed away and we have also given aid to the family of the concerned person as reflected in our records. This is the sad part here, please let us enjoy our rights but not to extend into this scenario,” Magboo said.

Aside from senior citizens’ rights, Magboo likewise reviewed the laws concerning persons with disabilities (PWDs).

“PWDs and senior citizens now have both enjoyed a 20 percent discount in restaurants, basic items as well as on the purchase of their medicines,” she said.

Her lecture included the Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 or An Act to Enhance the Mobility of Disabled Persons by Requiring Certain Buildings, Institutions, Establishments and Public Utilities to Install Facilities and Other Devices and RA No. 7277 otherwise known as the Magna Carta for PWDs.

About 30 senior citizens and PWD leaders participated at the forum held on Thursday at the Sanggunian Panlalawigan located with the Provincial Capitol ground. (LTC/LP/PIAR4B)
