The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSD) approved today, May 28 the proposed 15 megawatt coal fired-power plant in the Narra town, two days after the provincial board endorsed it.
The meeting was attended by DMCI Power Corporation as the proponent and majority members of the council from different government agencies including the city government being represented by Mayor Lucilo Bayron.
Governor Jose Chaves Alvarez has been very vocal of his support of the project to address power outages in the city and the province.
Board member Al Rama, chair of the committee on energy in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan said they endorsed the project as Palawan needs a reliable source of power to boost its development.
“Magtiwala lamang po kayo sa inyong lider dahil hindi kayo ipapahamak,” said Rama.
Sister Xenia Mae Juanitas, representative of the non-government organizations in the PCSD presented her disapproval and raised several questions regarding the project.
Juanitas however did not succeed to change the decision of majority of the members of the council.
NGO’s particurlarly the Palawan Alliance for Clean Energy said that this move of the provincial board and the PCSD is expected.
Cynthia Sumagaysay-Del Rosario said the oppositor’s were never given a chance to be heard during consultations conducted from the barangay level to PCSD.
She said she is saddened by this recent news about PCSD approval.
The environmental body is known for promoting the zero carbon in resorts and other establishments.
” This is a sad day for Palawan,” Sumagaysay said.
