Palawan students qualify for sci-tech scholarships

Some 34 students from Palawan have qualified for scholarships under the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) program offering science and technology courses in top technological schools in the country.

Athena Colline Verdey, Science Research Specialist II of DOST-MIMAROPA told Palawan News on Friday the students have qualified in the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) Merit Scholarship Program for students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.

She added they were among 180 students from Region IV-B who have qualified for scholarship in any state college and university rated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as Centers of Excellence (COE) or Centers of Development (COD) for the priority Science and Technology courses, and in institutions with Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP) FAAP Level III Accreditation.

Most of the schools with FAAP level III accreditations are in Metro Manila, explained Verdey.

“Ang mga courses dito ay yung priorities ng programa, particularly mga science and technology courses” she explained.

The courses are based on the priority identified Science and Technology courses including engineering in various fields, chemistry, biology, information technology system, agriculture, environmental sciences, mathematics, petroleum engineering, fisheries, forestry, marine biology, public health, manufacturing engineering, geothermal engineering, medical technology, veterinary medicine, aeronautical engineering, meteorology, pharmacy, mining engineering, microbiology, metallurgical engineering, industrial design, mechatronics engineering, geodetic engineering, agricultural and biosystems engineering, applied physics, psychology, [ackaging engineering, manufacturing engineering,mechatronics and robotics, molecular biology and other science and technology field.

Verdey said that the allowances that the students will receive while studying includes the tuition and other school fees at P10 thousand per semester, P10 thousand per year as book allowance, one economy class round-trip fare for those studying outside their home province, monthly living allowance ranging from P3 thousand to P6 thousand depending on the priority courses of DOST-SEI, summer allowance and post graduation allowance.

She added that upon completion of the course, the student beneficiary is required to render service in-country equivalent to the length of time that he/ she enjoyed the DOST scholarship.
