Following the approval of P4 million assistance of Puerto Princesa City, the Palawan Provincial Government (PGP) is also set to provide 300 sacks of rice to the victims of recent earthquakes in southern Mindanao.
During the regular session of provincial board on Tuesday, Board Member Sharon Abiog-Onda said that provincial government is also capable to provide assistance to the families in Mindanao.
Onda also cited the previous assistance provided by the provincial government to Batanes which was also damaged from an earthquake.
“If you may recall, we also provided assistance to Batanes during the calamity nakaraan. Currently, we still see our brothers and sisters in Mindanao suffering from the earthquake kung saan nakita natin kung gaano kahirap at kalakas ang tama sa kanila. There are many organizations who extend their help, I think we are also able to provide assistance,” Onda said.
Chairman of committee on appropriations Board Member Leoncio Ola said that Palawan Governor Jose Alvarez decided to provide food items as it is more important than financial assistance.
“Rice or financial ang mahalaga ay matulungan sila but the governor decided to provide rice not financial assistance. Sa ngayon mas kailangan nila ang pagkain kaysa sa pera. Mayroon na ring navy vessel na magdadala doon sa area,” Ola explained.
A 6.5 magnitude earthquake has caused large damages and a number of casualties in Mindanao.
In addition, Puerto Princesa City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) head Earl Timbancaya said Monday that Mayor Lucilo Bayron is requesting to extend help to two LGUs in northern Cotabato namely municipalities of Tulunan and Makilala.
One million financial assistance for each municipality and two million worth of food and non-food items will be distributed.
“Itong LGUs na ito ang hardest hit based on existing reports from national agencies. Meron naman po tayong food and non-food items na readily available na ibigay,” Timbancaya said.
