The Palawan Provincial Board approved on Tuesday a resolution that is seeking the construction of the Southern Palawan Medical School (SPMS) in Brooke’s Point.
Board Member Eduardo Modesto Rodriguez, the author of the resolution, said the SPMS will be established with the help of the Palawan State University (PSU).
“We know this is really important because we have 10 hospitals that are under construction,” Rodriguez said.
He said the medical school is important “particularly in the delivery of basic health services to Palaweños dwelling in distant barangays.”
With the SPMS, Rodriguez said, the province can already have doctors which can be assigned in municipal hospitals.
“We need a lot of doctors sa mga susunod na taon at alam ko malaki ang maitutulong nito kaya ito ay isinusulong natin,” Rodriguez pointed out.
He also said that it will “ease the burden of the provincial government which is currently sending an estimated 40 scholars to study medicine outside Palawan.”
Rodriguez’ approved measure said the medical school is a response to the need for municipal hospitals to have doctors.
It can be implemented under the Infrastructure, Health, Education, Livelihood, and Protection of the environment (IHELP) initiative of the provincial government, he said.
