The thirty (30) candidates for Miss Subaraw 2019 came from various cities and provinces in the country.

The Subaraw Biodiversity Festival has opened this year’s search for Miss Subaraw 2019 to 30 candidates from various cities and provinces in the country in line with the aim to turn it into an annual national and international event that will mark the celebration of the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) Day.

Wearing their casual attires, the candidates were presented to the media Monday morning by Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) superintendent Elizabeth Maclang, PPUR Festival Partners Foundation, Inc. president Joy Suarez, Mayor Lucilo Bayron, and other city officials.

Of the total number of candidates, around 20 joined from outside the province.

Bayron said this year marks many firsts for the national festival, such as the open frisbee competition and Miss Subaraw 2019.

“Ito ay pambihirang festival dahil naka-base siya sa biodiversity, sa iba’t-ibang buhay sa dagat at lupa. Last year, sinabi natin na gusto natin maging national event ito at ito na ang taon na nagpapatunay na ito ay isa ng national event. Natutuwa tayo dahil maraming sumali from outside Palawan,” Bayron said during a short speech.

The biodiversity festival will run until November 11, the declared PPUR Day based on Proclamation No. 816.

Some of the candidates who have joined are from Bulacan, Zambales, Zamboanga, Aklan, Cebu, Laguna, Ilocos Sur, Camarines Norte, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Pampanga, Batangas, Romblon, Malabon City, and Lipa City.

Anjelijhen Damasco of Malabon City said she will promote the PPUR by coming up with video blogs or vlogs that would show its rich biodiversity.

“I want to promote the PPUR by doing vlogs about it because we are very engaged in social media. Some of the young people are creating Youtube channels to I can also do for the promotion of Underground River and other places,” she said,

Jamaica Venturillo from Cagayancillo said the importance given to biodiversity conservation makes the festival unique from the other events in the country.

She said Subaraw can make use of social media in promoting the conservation of the environment not only in the PPUR but also in other tourist destinations in the country.

“We live in a modern world where we do everything through social media. Through this, I will also promote by doing information and education campaigns on how to protect and conserve the environment because nowadays, the majority of the people don’t know any more about the different environmental issues. We need to teach and educate them on how to have a better environment. Change will always start in ourselves,” Venturillo said.

In Palawan, the candidates are from Cuyo, Aborlan, El Nido, Cagayancillo, Barangay San Miguel, Inagawan, and Brooke’s Point.

Some of the Miss Subaraw activities are Festival costume competition and fashion show on November 5 at SM City Puerto Princesa, Talent competition on November 6 at NCCC mall Palawan and Swimsuit competition on November 7 at Astoria Palawan.

Guests during the pageant night will be Angelee Delos Reyes, Miss Philippines Earth 2018; Jb Saliva, Mr. World Asia Pacific 2019; Vin Abrenica and Leren Mae Bautista, Miss Globe 2019- 2nd Runner Up as guest judge.
