The establishment of  Mindanao State University (MSU)-Marawi Extension Program in Bataraza will help to produce the best students who can help improve the town and neighboring municipalities and increase the interest in education in the southern Palawan.

Mayor Abraham Ibba said MSU would provide students with another choice for selecting an academic institution that will provide programs offering that they want to pursue in addition to Palawan State University (PSU) and Western Philippines University (WPU).

Theresa Garcia, technical officer PIS, Local Economic and Investment Promotions Office (LEIPO), and local coordinator of MSU in Bataraza, also stressed that inviting the university is a significant achievement for Bataraza, citing the university’s potential to produce high-quality students after four years.

“Malaking bagay ‘yan lalo na in terms of development na wherein  essential for human and knowledge development, may kasabihan nga tayo na “through education the country shall receive light”. The academe has to be very active with that task. We are now living in a very complicated world, so we could cope up, life now is full of challenges and this generations need to be equipped with the right knowledge, skills and right attitude in order help build our nation. “she said.

“Since nandito na ang MSU, after four years, mas makakapag-produce tayo ng cream of the crop, best students, quality products just as well as sa ibang universities. This generation will be responsible in building this community and other places to become a better place to live.” she added.

The Mindanao State University-System Admission and Scholarship Examination (MSU-SASE) was conducted in March 31, 2021 and College Entrance Test last July 31, 2021 for those who would like to avail scholarship grants and be admitted in MSU.

The LGU and MSU signed a memorandum of agreement last July 15.

Due to the late release of the test result, some passers were already enrolled in other universities, Garcia said. Out of over 200 qualified applicants, 157 had confirmed their slots and enrolled themselves.

The top programs chosen by the qualified applicants are nursing, civil engineering, BS secondary and BS elementary education, BS information technology, and BS in Teaching Arabic. LGU proposed 13 programs to be offered in Bataraza which include Eco-tourism, Agriculture, Political Science, Business Administration Major in Economics AND BS in Entrepreneurial  Marketing, BS Fisheries, BS In Agriculture, and AB in Shariah.

Qualified applicants were informed through call and the admission forms were directly sent to MSU.

Students who are now enrolled are not only coming from Bataraza, but also from other towns of Palawan like Quezon, Narra, Balabac, Brooke’s Point, Sofronio Española, and even Puerto Princesa.

“It’s really a big opportunity. Talking about clamor and quest for education, there will be a great chance for us na katulad niyan, not all programs are offered by other universities. Hindi na sila pupunta sa malayo,” she said.

“Programs offered in marawi ay pwedeng I-open dito sa MSU-Bataraza.” she added.

The professors and instructors for the programs will come directly from MSU through the virtual classes set up currently implemented in all schools due to pandemic.  Meanwhile students may have q face to face  classes if allowable at the 2nd floor in Bataraza Town Center.” she mentioned.

The internet connectivity is essential to among passers to assure that they could cope with the learning scheme implemented.

“Kaya nga challenge sa mga estudyante, kailangan talaga for them to be able to hurdle those challenges, they really have to do extra efforts. Ang mga bata, kahit anong mangyari talagang if they are decisive to finish a course or a degree,  magsusumikap sila,” she said.

Students will pay nothing during the enrollment and they are classified as full and partial scholars depending on the scores they gained from Admission Examination. The first 100 students based on their scores who enrolled will get free laptops from MSU.

The groundbreaking of the university at the 6-hectare land area in Barangay Inogbong will be scheduled during the third week of September. It will be followed by immediate construction of three-storey building with 15 classrooms and a two-storey admin building.

“So far, sa ngayon ay nag-start na ang clearing ng site and within this year, base don sa project proposal that was approved by the local government ay matatapos ang fencing at construction ng three-storey building and admin building. Iyon ang target this year kasi every year ay may target ang local government with regards sa infra  development ng campus site,” she said.

LGU will sustain the operation within three to four years until it becomes stable and independent.

“Ang site ay counterpart natin sa LGU Bataraza plus ‘yong ibang construction ng building  from province, meron din galing national. Sa  ngayon kasi bago pa tayo, ang commitment natin basta lahat ng pangangailangan, LGU will provide.” Ibba said.

One of the proposals of MSU is to  have a Science High School in Bataraza that will help to provide better education at the secondary level and equip students before entering the tertiary level.
