The Provincial Board has approved a measure urging local government units (LGUs) in Palawan to create anti-squatting committees that will address the unlawful occupation of land areas that are not being used by owners or the government.

In his approved resolution on Tuesday, board member Ryan Maminta said it is significant for Palawan LGUs to create them within their municipal councils to prevent illegal settlers from overtaking properties that are not theirs.

“It is imperative to address the problem on illegal settlers as we grow in terms of population and in support of the national government that strives to suppress professional squatters and syndicates. It is significant as we move towards the development of housing and shelter programs,” he said.

He said that it is in accordance with Republic Act 7279 or the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992.
