Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI) wants to hold the Ironman Triathlon 70.3 long distance race in Puerto Princesa City to put it in the world sports tourism map.
Princess Gallura, manager of SEI, said they want to bring Ironman Triathlon 70.3 to a “beautiful place” like the city with a unique environment, culture and traditions, and cuisines.
“Ang mission po ng company is to stage worldwide events that will put the Philippines in a triathlon and tourism map and this is one of the ways to do it,” Gallura said.
The triathlon is a series of long-distance races, including a 1.9-kilometer swim; 90-km biking and 21.1-km run covering a total distance of 70.3 miles.
SEI is proposing to hold the event on November 10 along with the celebration of the Subaraw Biodiversity Festival.
If approved, Gallura said the triathlon will start at Tagkawayan Beach where the participants will bike their way to the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex, run to the Baywalk, and back to the sports complex where the finish line will be.
“This is just preliminary, we’re still finding areas of attraction that we want to show, and to improve yung daan ng mga participants. There are still several areas that need road repair,” she said.
She assured the officials that Puerto Princesa will have an income of around P645 million coming from the participants, spectators, and sponsors.
Participants will be coming from different countries who have been participating in different triathlon events.
SEI is a private corporation established in 2008 by Wilfred Steven Uytengsu that has been granted the Ironman 70.3 license in the Philippines by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).
