Increase sought on government travel allowance

The Provincial Board has asked the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to increase the P800 daily allowance of personnel and staff to P2,600 to sustain their needs during official business travels.

In a resolution sponsorship speech, Board Member Leoncio Ola said Tuesday that it has been more than a decade since the P800 per day travel allowance was implemented.

The amount covers for P400 room accommodation; P240 for meals; and P160 for incidental expenses.

“Kung titignan ang P800 na ‘yan sobrang tagal ng ini-implement, kawawa ang mga empleyado natin na mga pinapadala sa Manila. Halos hindi pa sila nakakarating doon ubos na P800 na’ yan. Tapos may iiwan pa [allowance] sa pamilya nya dito,” Ola said.

He said that the current rate for travel allowance has become impractical even in Metro Manila areas since there are no lodging or pension houses anymore that charge P400 for accommodation.

Times and prices have changed, Ola said, as he urged the DBM to allow the P2,600 increase for P1,500 accommodation; P600 for meals; and P500 for incidental expenses.

“Siguro, it is about time na maisipan o i-review ng DBM na palitan na ang policy para mataasan ang allowance ng mga empleyado who go on official business for the provincial government,” he added.
