Palawan Governor Jose Alvarez is requesting the Provincial Board (PB) for the approval of P72,666,000 as financial assistance for the province’s 367 barangays.

Under the ordinance sponsored by Board Member Leoncio Ola, chair of the finance and appropriations committee, each barangay in the province stands to receive P198,000.

Ola said the assistance was not released for the last two years because of problems on signatories and amendments

“There is difficulty in complying with the enumerated requirements resulting in not releasing the P99,000 budgetary aid since 2017 and up to 2018. The signatories required are no longer sitting in their respective positions resulting in their refusal to sign documents. Second, the ordinance is now amended that allows the barangays to choose what programs or projects to fund but not limited to livelihood and livestock programs,” Ola said.

He said the financial assistance is part of the poverty reduction and community-driven development strategy of the provincial government aimed at providing alternative livelihood opportunities to the barangays.

It is also in compliance with Provincial Ordinance 1994-18 and 1846-17 that mandates an annual allocation of P99,000 as financial aid to all barangays in the province.
