SOFRONIO ESPAÑOLA, Palawan – Around a thousand indigent elderly pensioners here from nine barangays have received their benefits from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The P6,000 for each of them is mandated under Republic Act 9994, also known as the Expanded Senior Citizen’s Act of 2010 granting benefits and privileges to senior citizens.

Mary Grace dela Torre, the municipal social welfare and development officer of Sofronio Española, said Tuesday that the distribution of cash benefits was the second batch, while the third will be announced by the central office of the DSWD.

“Ramdam namin ang saya ng mga senior natin kasi natanggap na nila ‘yong pension nila. Actually, may ilan pang hindi kasama sa second batch na ito, pero tiniyak ni national na agad silang magbibigay ng communication kung kelan ang release ng third batch,” Dela Torre said.

She said the number of elderly pensioners who will be given their cash grants is over 500.

The distribution will be done until February 12. “Yong mga hindi nakakuha ngayon, bukas na nila makukuha,” she added.

She said they did the distribution for the first batch in October 2019.

RA 9994 further amends RA 7432, the act that maximizes the contribution of senior citizens to nation-building, grant benefits, and special privileges for other purposes.

The law pursues “to promote a just and dynamic social order that will ensure the prosperity and independence of the nation and free the people from poverty through policies that provide adequate social services, promote full employment, a rising standard of living and improved quality of life”.
