The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office said on Tuesday they have stepped up their campaign against violence among women and children by focusing on areas of the province that are main tourism destinations, including El Nido, Coron and Puerto Princesa City.
PSWD head Abegail Ablaña said their campaign involves the conduct of orientations for various tourism establishments aimed at discouraging abuse on women and children, including child prostitution and human trafficking.
She said that in the last two years, the PSWDO has been focusing mainly on establishments in El Nido and Coron which have the highest tourist arrivals in the province.
She added that they have also undertaken the rescue of several women in the capital and coming from municipalities who were victims of human trafficking.
“Mostly ‘yong narerescue natin are from municipalities. And so far wala naman minors,” she said.
Meanwhile, Board Member David Francis Ponce de Leon said he has proposed a measure aimed at regulating establishments to prevent child abuse and prostitution.
“Alam naman natin na tourist attraction tayo. So marami tayong inns especially sa north. This is just a way of monitoring them kasi sometimes may mga nakakalusot na mga underage at ibang di kanais-nais na nangyayari,” he said.
DSWD-MIMAROPA records showed that in 2017, there were 13 cases of sexual abuse of minors and eight victims of involuntary prostitution in women sector for the year 2015.
