Mayor Lucilo Bayron had two virtues to impart on his Independence Day message Wednesday – courage and loyalty.
“Remember the courage and loyalty of our forefather,” Bayron said in a message on June 12 on the occasion of the 121st Philippine Independence Day.
“Sa mahalagang araw na ito ng ating kasaysayan marapat na tayo ay magbalik-tanaw at magbigay pugay sa lahat ng kagitingan, katapangan, at katapatan ng ating mga ninuno na may dugong bayani. Hindi sila nagdalawang-isip na isulong ang kanilang ipinaglabang kalayaan ng inang bayan kahit na ang kanilang buhay pa ang naging kapalit,” Bayron said in his message that was read by incoming Puerto Princesa City Vice Mayor Maria Nancy Socrates at the People’s Amphitheater in Mendoza Park.
The message also noted the bravery of Palawan local hero Dr. Higinio Mendoza Sr.
He said the memories of the past will all the more ignite the faithfulness of the citizens of the Philippine Republic.
Government employees and uniformed personnel attended the event led by Vice Mayor Luis Marcaida III, city councilors, and Board Member Al Rama who represented Governor Jose Alvarez.
The Independence Day celebration with the theme “Kalayaan 2019: Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban, Alay sa Masaganang Kinabukasan”, was highlighted by a gun salute, and parade from the Liwasang Rizal to Liwasang Mendoza.
The parade was participated by officials from the city and provincial government, schools and universities, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Western Command (WESCOM), Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP), and other concerned agencies.
Flowers were also offered to the statues of Dr. Jose Rizal and a local hero Dr. Higinio Mendoza.
Brigadier General Lauro Tianchon, commander of the Western Command (WESCOM) also said it is necessary to always bear in mind the sacrifices made by Philippine heroes for the sake of freedom.
“Lagi nating alalahanin, na sa likod ng kasaarinlan ay ang dugong dumanak sa digmaan at ang atingg katapatan ay ipinakita ng pag-ibig sa ating inang bayan. Kung kaya, ang pagdiriwang na ito ay isang selebrasyon ng pasasalamat sa kapwa Pilipino na nag-alay ng kanilang buhay mula noong ilang siglo na ang nakakaraan hanggang ngayon bilang isang lahing Pilipino,” Tianchon said.
He added that WESCOM lives the life of Philippine heroes “to ensure the protection of the freedom that they have fought in the past for the country.”
