The Department of Health (DOH) said more Palaweño women are now using modern contraceptive methods compared to the previous years.
Dr. Mathew Medrano, medical officer II of the DOH MIMAROPA, said there has been a 77 percent increase in contraceptives prevalence rate (CPR) this year compared to 2017 figures.
The CPR pertains to women who employ or whose partner use at least one method of birth controls between the ages of 15-49.
“By the end of the year, maaaring mag-improve pa ang data. Last year, 60 to 70 percent lang for the whole year. But this year, hindi pa tapos ang quarter ay tumaas na ang bilang ng mga kababaihan natin na gumagamit ng modern family method,” Dr. Medrano said during a Kapihan at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
He added women below 18 years old need the consent of their parents before they can use any birth control method.
“Wala tayong age limit, mayroon tayong mga contraceptives na pwede sa adolescent o mga bata, but based sa batas kapag menor de edad dapat may consent ng parents. Kailangan papayag muna sila (parents) bago natin bibigyan ng (family planning) method ang kanilang anak,” he said.
He also explained that family planning under Republic Act 10354 or the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health (RPRH) Act of 2012 is not about planning to limit the number of born children or spacing, but responsible parenting to have children.
“Kung sinusuportahan nila ang RPRH hindi lang dapat family planning, its responsible parenthood and reproductive health as a whole. Ang family planning ay hindi lang limiting at spacing, kasama doon ang achieving na magkaanak. Kaya kung gusto nilang magkaanak na kasing dami ng dalawang basketball team ay hindi natin sila pipigilan, walang problema, as long as tanggap nila ang responsibility nila katulad ng nasasaad sa batas,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Medrano said the DOH is still aiming to increase the awareness of families in far-flung areas regarding the RPRH law and its goals.
“Ang drive natin ngayon talaga is information dissemination para mas makarating sa kanila ang tamang information at mas maintindihan nila. Pero hindi natin sila pinipilit, dapat ay voluntarily nilang tanggapin ýong method na gusto nila,” Medrano added.
