The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has already submitted for bidding the cellular site project for Kalayaan municipality.
Carmela Valencia, operations-in-charge of the DICT’s technical division, told Thursday to Palawan News that the development of additional sites in the province, including the island municipality in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), is on-going.
“Hindi pa tapos [ang installation] ng mga sites but on-going ang mga developments d’yan sa Taytay, Cuyo at Busuanga. ‘Yong Kalayaan may inaayos pa tayo d’yan but still ginagawa naman natin ang kaya natin para malagyan ‘yan,” Valencia said.
The project was a product of an approved resolution from the Palawan Provincial Board (PB) which requested the fast-tracking of the installation of a cellular site on the island.
However, Valencia said only Smart has the capability to deliver the requirement and operate in Kalayaan.
“Ang alam ko Smart lang ang sa Kalayaan, ‘yan lang ang nag-iisang area sa buong province na smart ang ilalagay. Hindi kasi kaya ng iba,” she added.
Recently, Globe Telecom has requested an endorsement from the provincial government to put up 43 additional sites in the province.
The island of Kalayaan is among the 43 proposed sites along with Coron, Busuanga, San Vicente, Brooke’s Point, Sofronio Española, 11 for El Nido, 18 for Puerto Princesa and two for Bataraza.
During its regular session on Tuesday, the PB passed a resolution that requested both telecommunication companies (telcos) to put up cellular sites in Kalayaan.
“Hanggang ngayon walang maayos na signal doon. Kaya nahihirapan pa rin ang mga sundalo at mga kababayan natin. Sana malagyan na,” board member David Francis Ponce de Leon said.
